AEA selects Amy Marlowe as executive director

Amy Hubbard Marlowe is the new executive director of the Alabama Education Association, the organization’s board of directors announced this week.

Marlowe has served as interim executive director for two years and previously worked in the association’s governmental relations, public relations and research and technology branches.

“I appreciate the vote of confidence the AEA Board has given me,” Marlowe said in a written statement. “There’s never been a more perilous time for Alabama educators and the media should continue to focus on their heroic efforts. With the legislative session beginning (today), my attention will be focused on the State House, as it has been throughout my long tenure with AEA. None of us could have predicted the events of the last year, but Alabama school employees – despite having more and more added to them each day – have risen to every challenge.”

The AEA’s primary legislative goal this session is a significant pay raise for educators, the press release said. Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to request in the proposed budget she sends lawmakers this week a 2% increase, ADN reported last week.

“Alabama’s educators and our Association look forward to working with the legislature to ensure every Alabama student has the support they need to strive coming out of this national public health and economic crisis,” AEA President Sherry Tucker said. “We remain focused on ensuring that Alabama can attract and retain the best educators to support our students as we recover from the pandemic. We have much work to do, and AEA continues to be the education leader making decisions about the future of Alabama’s students and our state.”

Marlowe received undergraduate degrees in political science and public relations from the University of Alabama. She earned a law degree there in 1993. Marlowe and her family live in Sylacauga.
