BIRMINGHAM – Ms. Annie Avery was crowned Ms. Alabama Nursing Home 2018 during the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham – The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover on Monday, July 30. She was crowned by Miss Alabama 2018 Callie Walker, who was co-host of the event.
Ms. Avery, age 80, is a resident of East Glen Center for Nursing & Rehab located in Birmingham. Ms. Avery moved to Birmingham from her native New Orleans in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. As a young woman, she marched for voting rights with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2002, she was named one of the Women of the Year by the magazine City Business New Orleans. She has two sons, nine grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
As Ms. Alabama Nursing Home, Ms. Avery will travel to various nursing homes and community events to share her experiences. During her reign, she will also serve as an ambassador for nursing home residents at several Alabama Nursing Home Association events.

The top 10 finalists, selected from the field of 61 contestants, had individual interviews with the panel of celebrity judges before competing on stage for the crown. All other contestants in attendance were part of the Honor Court and were individually recognized during the pageant.
